Hamburg became a district minting location and in 1618, Hamburg became a free city of the empire.
1806-1814
The French occupied Hamburg and the mint was closed in 1813 for a short time.
1842
A large fire destroyed the Hamburg Mint.
1873
Decision by the citizens to erect a new mint.
1875
Completion of the ‘new’ mint near Hamburg main station. The Hamburg Mint was granted the Emperor’s right to mint the standardised German currency with the minting identification ‘J’.
1943
The mint was largely destroyed by air attacks during the second world war. Reconstruction did not begin until 1946.
