The historic development of coin-minting in Hamburg.

  In the 9th century  
The archbishop of ‘Hammaburg’ exercised the imperial minting right. The first coin minted is dated back to 834.
  1189  
Award of the imperial right ‘potestas examinandi’, for inspection and for the authenticity of the coins from the Count’s Schauenburg mint by Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa.
  1325  
Hamburg obtained the right to mint coins as a result of the purchase of the mint from the Count of Holstein.
  1373-1379  
Founding of the Wenden Minting Association, where Hamburg played a significant role. Minting of the Witten (first multiple pfennig coin).
  1435  
Emperor Sigismund granted Hamburg the right to mint gold florins. In 1475, Emperor Friedrich III extended this right to the minting of gold ducats.
