The Hamburg Mint can look back on a long tradition, one that is closely linked to the development of the Free Hanseatic City of Hamburg. As a result of Hamburg’s membership of the association of Hanseatic cities and their currency agreements, the Hamburg Mint has had an important part to play in the long and chequered history of German minting. The first coin minted in Hamburg is dated to 834. Even today, minting of coins is a public duty and one of the most exclusive duties of the Hamburg mint is the minting of the Euro coins for the Federal Republic of Germany with the identification mark ‘J’.
